Anne Frank was born on June 12th, 1929. Ninety years on, her legacy of hope, empathy and mutual respect endures. Join us in 2019 as we commemorate what would be her 90th birthday at the Spirit of Anne Frank Awards. 

The SAFA Outstanding Educator Awards are given annually to educational leaders who have proven exceptional in their schools, institutions, and communities

This leadership is demonstrated in their desire and drive to carry on Anne Frank’s legacy by inspiring the next generation of humanitarians through their example of fostering awareness and combating intolerance. Interest and involvement should be exhibited through innovative curriculum and/or by spearheading initiatives that address human rights and strive to create positive change. Past winners of these awards include classroom teachers, school administrators, museum educators, community organizers, nonprofit founders, and others. 

Nominee Eligibility

● Educators may self-nominate 


● An applicant may nominate on behalf of an educator

● Nominees must be a teacher or administrator at a public, private, charter, or online school in the United States. 


● Must be an educator or administrator at a museum or other cultural institution in the United States whose mission is education. 

Essay Prompt 

How has Anne Frank’s legacy inspired the nominee to take action in the classroom, institution, or community? What actions have been taken and how will those efforts be sustained? 

Essay Guidelines & Formatting Requirements 

● A 500-word essay is the main component of the application and should focus on how Anne’s legacy inspired actions in the classroom, institution, or community. 

● You should highlight how the nominee works to combat intolerance, spread positive messaging, and why the work is important to you.

● Please discuss how Anne Frank’s legacy contributed to that inspiration and sustained efforts. We strongly recommend that applicants and nominees read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and include any themes from the diary that relate to your experience.

● Your essay should be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins and saved as a PDF.

● Applicants must submit the 500 word essay.
